art pepper - winter moon

art pepper plus strings
a pretty wonderful record
Winter Moon is a 1980 album by Art Pepper playing with Stanley Cowell, Howard Roberts, Cecil McBee, Carl Burnett and strings arranged and conducted by Bill Holman
Recorded 3, 4 September 1980

”It took me a lifetime to do it," Art Pepper said of Winter Moon, "and if somebody doesn't like it . . . well, they don't know what to listen for." This is Art with strings playing ballads as nobody else could: tender, touching, funky, and impassioned.

It seems that these 2 Jazz Laboratory albums were issued by Savoy with 4 tracks on the A side and the same 4 tracks on the B side with the rhythm section only so you could "play along".
This Japanese CD contains the 2 A sides and, given the original purpose , they are fine recordings.

The first four tracks are

don ellis - electric bath

Electric Bath (1967), was nominated for a Grammy award and also earned an "Album of the Year" award from Down Beat magazine. The recording was Ellis's first studio album with his orchestra and also his first on the Columbia label. The 5/4 "Indian Lady," from the Electric Bath session, features passages of Indian-inspired textures . A shortened version was released as a single. Another selection on the recording, titled "Open Beauty," features psychedelic webs of electronic effects, including creative trumpet improvisation by Ellis utilizing an echoplex tape-loop.
