barney wilen - tilt

1957 album.
Highly recommended debut by the 19 year old French tenor star.
This was recorded on January 7th 1957 and later that year he worked with Miles Davis on Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (Lift To The Scaffold): Original Soundtrack.

"After a solo with Miles Davis' band in the Club Saint Germain during the winter of 1958, 21-year-old Barney Wilen unhooked his saxophone, came to the bar, ordered a double and said: "You know what Miles just said to me? He said: 'Why don't you stop playing those terrible notes?'" Not having a low insecurity threshold, Wilen immediately went back to the bandstand to play some more of whatever you call them. It would take more than words to kill Barney. "

sonny rollins - alfie

original music from the film score - 1966
Oliver Nelson (conductor, arranger, tenor saxophone)
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 26, 1966. Originally released on Impulse (AS-9111)
Apparently this is not the actual music heard in the film.
That was recorded in 1965 by Sonny Rollins with a British group which included Ronnie Scott.
This album was recorded a year later at the instigation of Impulse.

sleeve notes

"this is a great 1960s hard bop date by Horace Silver's great quintet ... It is also quite historic because it is the only live recording by this group. No wonder Len Lyons named it one of the 101 best jazz albums in his book of the same name. "

archie shepp - deja vu

Archie Shepp(ts),
Harold Mabern(p),
George Mraz(b),
Billy Drummond(ds).
Rec. Jun. 11 & 12, 2001.

Japanese CD Venus TKCV-35096

"Beautiful ballads from Archie Shepp -- one of his later dates for Venus Records, recorded with a soulful, subtle sound that's totally great! The Shepp heard here is hardly the freewheeling player of 60s avant years -- and is instead an aging master of the tenor who manages to draw on years of experience, and bring them into play with simple touches that are totally great! Most tunes here are taken at a relaxed pace -- but Shepp blows with this offbeat sensibility that's really wonderful, a bit like some of the understated genius Coleman Hawkins brought to records like this during his own later years. The album's drenched in soul, and recorded with really beautiful sound ... "

Enja CD ENJ 4050-2
An overlooked treasure from Archie Shepp .... a great later session that has some surprisingly wonderful moments... great soprano sax lines from Archie -- blown beautifully over soaring rhythms from Kenny Werner on piano... The track really cooks wonderfully ... perfect examples of the later soulful sound of Shepp in the post-Impulse years!

the dave brubeck quartet featuring paul desmond - buried treasures

Recorded May 12-14, 1967 - Mexico City, Mexico
This 1967 album is one of their best.
The whole quartet is on fire and the improvisations are outstanding.
The sound quality is also very clean and sounds great.
And Paul Desmond does , in his own hackneyed phrase , "sound like a dry martini".
